In 1999, the Vancouver Chinese Instrumental Music Society was established to support the work of the Vancouver Chinese Music Ensemble, which was formed in 1989. This versatile group embraces the popular and the classical traditions of China as well as western classical and contemporary music performed on Chinese instruments. The Ensemble has a broad repertoire encompassing traditional music from various regions of China, to adaptations of Canadian folk songs and other music.
Taps and Twang was an event presented by the Vancouver Chinese Instrumental Music Society and hosted in partnership with the beautiful Dr. Sun Yat Sen Chinese Garden in Vancouver, BC.
Billed as an “Intercultural Jam Session”, the event mixed guitars, tap dancing, banjo, and drums with the sanxian and erhu, two traditional Chinese stringed instruments.
Everything was ready to go-- all they needed was a name. So, putting my naming skills to the test, I consulted with the Artistic Manager and filled a page with potential names.
In the end, they chose “Taps and Twang”.
Out of all the names, it was also one of my favorites because I incorporated alliteration, assonance, and onomatopoeia to make the name especially memorable. It has a nice ring to it, doesn't it? The name also fit thematically, with the combination of ‘taps’ (from the tap dancing) and ‘twang’ (from the strings) introducing the event's core idea in just 3 words.
